Pond Nets
There are many types on the market, the main critea to use when choosing the right one for your pond.
How far do you need to reach into a pond?
If this varies choose a telescopic model.
NB. Remember never to extend fully the telescopic pole and attempt to retrieve heavy items like a large pond fish, plant etc. This may damage the handle.
What type of netting do I choose?
Make sure you are purchasing a pond net designed for catching pet fish not game fish.
Netting for pet fish should be knot free and rot proof. Most of made from nylon so are hard wearing but make sure it is stored in a dry state to avoid damage over time.
Mesh Type.
Common terms: Hexamesh , gauze.
This is very important as this determines how fast you can move the pond net through the water.
If you have large fish or fish that move fast through the water like koi carp choose a net with a large mesh, this allows the water to pass through quickly.
If you want a multipurpose pond net that can also catch small suspended debris choose one with a small size mesh.
NB. These type do not move through the water quickly and are often called skimmer nets.
Type of net
Nets are generally broken down into 5 categories:
- Pond nets: general purpose for pond owners to use retrieving fish for treatment, isolation, or moving.
- Koi nets: used by Koi keepers , usually pan shaped heads with longer sturdy poles for catching prized specimens for bowling to inspect , judge , or treatment.
- Skimmer nets: used to collect floating debris, single cell algae,silt etc. Ideal for catching fry due to the small mesh.
- Koi socks: used to catch koi without damage, often four 4 foot long with smooth mesh, open ended.
- Isolation nets: used to isolate fish, from other pond members, ideal when fish is suffering from disease or aggression.
Remember if children are using nets around a pond, they should be under the control of an adult, as over reaching can often lead to loss of balance resulting in falling into the water.
