Aeration

Aerating a pond with a pond air pump offer many advantages to a pond. The air is pumped down airline to an air diffuser to be released into the water.

Common terms: DOC (dissolved oxygen content), diffuser, aerating.

Advantages:

  • Increases dissolved oxygen content
  • Allows increased stocking levels
  • Increase filter efficiency.

Disadvantages:

  • To find an air pump that can pump to the depth of your pond
  • Bubbles breaking on surface obscure fish.
  • Requires electrical power (except battery, solar powered).

Tips:

  • Can be used as a winter ice preventer by keeping surface agitated
  • Note: For best results place air diffuser 4 inches under surface to prevent the warmer water from the bottom of the pond being drawn to the surface and cooled
  • Use in heavily planted ponds. Helps prevents carbon dioxide build up due to photosynthesis by plants
  • Note: During day some plants give off oxygen but at night produce carbon dioxide resulting in possible fish loss
  • Put an air stone in the filter
  • Note: Increased oxygen in the filter increases bacteria levels promoting better water chemistry.
